MASA 06: 7 Nights/8 Days Overland Durban Swaziland Kruger: South Africa Holiday

Day 1: Durban
We travel 4-hours from Durban to St Lucia and on arrival enjoy a boat ride on the Lake St Lucia estuary, where you may see hippos and crocodiles.

Forming part of the Isimangaliso Wetlands, this area has been declared a World Heritage site because of its unique biodiversity and importance to marine conservation. With over 500 different bird species in the region, it also offers outstanding bird watching. There is also the optional opportunity to visit a traditional Zulu Village.

Regardless of hotel meal plan, all meals whilst on tour are included and are prepared & served from the overland vehicle except for optional dinners in Durban & Johannesburg. Alcohol is not included. Accommodation varies and includes lodges, hotels, hostels, chalets, permanent tented camps and traditional huts. Bedding is provided, but you do need to bring your own towel.

Day 2: Durban- Swaziland
Today we spend 5-hours on the road, first driving to the famous Hluhluwe National Park that saved the rhino from extinction, and here we enjoy a game drive in an open 4x4 vehicle.

One of South Africa’s most beautiful game parks, Hluhluwe is home to all the Big 5 - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino - as well as the subcontinent’s largest population of endangered rhino. Hope to see giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons, cheetah and many other  interesting animals. With over 500 different bird species, outstanding bird watching is also guaranteed!

In the afternoon we cross the border in to the mountainous kingdom of Swaziland, where optional activities include mountain biking, hiking and horse riding.

Day 3: Swaziland
Relax and enjoy walking amongst the wildlife of Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland’s oldest game sanctuary and covering over 4,500 hectares.

As there are no large predators in this reserve, there are a number of self-guided hikes available which is an excellent way of interacting with the flora and fauna here. We also have traditional Swazi dancing to look forward to after dinner.

Day 4: Swaziland-Kruger
We travel 5-hours through the beautiful mountain scenery of Swaziland today and re-enter South Africa, continuing to the world famous Kruger National Park for two unforgettable days of game viewing.

Our truck gives us an elevated view, so game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately in this vast 2-million hectare game sanctuary the size of Wales. Hopefully we will see several species of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and maybe even giraffe before we reach our rest camp. After checking in, settle in and relax in the atmosphere that only the African bushveld can provide!

Day 5: Kruger
Today is devoted to game viewing in the Kruger National Park, with a number of game drives to give us the best opportunity to see all the animals. We set off early as the camp gates open (05h30 to 06h00 depending on the season), to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day.

Our truck gives us a height advantage over other vehicles, which means better photo opportunities, as we explore the famous Kruger National Park, which offer magnificent game viewing opportunities and the highest concentration of lion in the whole of Africa. We hope to see several of the Big Five today - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino - as well as many other species. With nearly 150 different species of mammals and over 100 species of reptiles in the Kruger National Park, you can hope to see cheetah, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons, wild dogs and many other interesting animals. With over 500 different bird species including eagles, kingfishers, vultures and storks, outstanding bird watching is also guaranteed.
After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way as you have never seen them before – as well as the spectacular Southern Cross.

Optional activities include a Night Drive, a dawn Game Walk with an armed ranger, or a full day 4x4 game drive (subject to availability).

Day 6: Kruger
We leave the Kruger National Park today and travel 2-hours to Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where you have the unique opportunity of viewing wild lion, leopard, cheetah, eagles and vultures at close quarters. Animals found injured, poisoned or orphaned are given a second chance and released back into the wilds.

Afterwards we continue to our lodge, where we will experience some typical South African cuisine and enjoy an evening of traditional song and dance.

Day 7: Kruger- Johannesburg-Depart Home
Our last day is a long one on the road, as we travel 9-hours through the splendour of the Drakensberg Panorama Route to Johannesburg.
